The Plan

Fast Facts – Supportive Housing Programs

YWCA of the Greater Capital Region is thrilled to announce our proposal for a transformative

multi-family supportive housing development for downtown Troy. We are committed to providing

innovative ventures that benefit and support the Capital Region community.

The build

  • Our plan is to develop a five-story U-shaped building on our existing parking lot, which is 0.61 acres. The existing YWCA building at 21 1st Street will remain.

  • The new building will have 53 units, including 10 studio apartments, 36 one-bedroom, and 7 two-bedroom apartments. The building will also have an open playground in the center courtyard, providing a safe and welcoming space for our community.

  • The ground floor will feature offices and residential amenities, as well as 15 ground-floor parking spaces with a one-way entrance and exit at the 1st Street alleyway. Additionally, there will be internal bike storage to encourage sustainable transportation.

  • Our commitment to the community extends beyond our building’s design. We will construct new water and sanitary sewer connection from the existing City of Troy public utilities, ensuring that our building meets modern standards for utility infrastructure.

The need:

  • For over 140 years, the YWCA of the Greater Capital Region has been committed to providing safe, affordable, and supportive housing for single women.

  • Today, we are one of the area’s largest providers of supportive housing for homeless women.

  • Our organization currently has enough housing for 104 women and more than 50 children.

  • Each resident is given wraparound support to assist with a range of needs, including job readiness and financial literacy training.

  • Despite our efforts, there is a constant waiting list for our supportive housing services.

  • A 2022 report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition states that a person would need to work two full-time jobs at minimum wage in order to afford a two-bedroom apartment in the Capital Region.

  • Last year, 44% of Capital Region renters paid more than a third of their income towards rent.

  • At YWCA, we believe in providing innovative and quality development that positively impacts the community. We are excited about this new project and look
